Burst Statistics as a Criterion for Imminent Failure

چکیده
Abstract: The distribution of the magnitudes of damage avalanches during a failure process typically follows a power law. When these avalanches are recorded close to the point at which the system fails catastrophically, we find that the power law has an exponent which differs from the one characterizing the size distribution of all avalanches. We demonstrate this analytically for bundles of many fibers with statistically distributed breakdown thresholds for the individual fibers. In this case the magnitude distribution D(∆) for the avalanche size ∆ follows a power law ∆ with ξ = 3/2 near complete failure, and ξ = 5/2 elsewhere. We also study a network of electric fuses, and find numerically an exponent 2.0 near breakdown, and 3.0 elsewhere. We propose that this crossover in the size distribution may be used as a signal for imminent system failure.

Can we predict the failure point of a loaded composite material?
We discuss this problem through fiber bundle model (FBM) -where a bundle of fibers is subjected to external load and fibers have distributed thresholds. External load is increased quasi-statically -which produces 'bursts' (number of failing fibers) of diffrent sizes. The burst statistics shows a robust crossover behavior near the failure point which can be treated as a signature of imminent fai...
متن کاملProposals for a Failure Criterion Applicable to Discontinuous Rocks
The existing failure criteria to evaluate discontinuous rocks are predominatly based on the relations between principal stresses at failure. None of the criteria has a direct reference to the magnitude of deformation as a major parameter in rock Several reasons are identified indicating that the selection of peak stress as a major parameter, which is obtained through the evaluation of a failure...

A water distribution network is one of the important parts of infrastructure systems. The efficient management and proactive planning of capital investment of these assets are fundamental for efficient and effective service delivered by water companies. The direct economic costs (i.e. rehabilitation investment, repair costs, water loss, etc.) as well as indirect costs (i.e. service and traffic ...
متن کاملNew empirical failure criterion for shale
A new failure criterion was presented to predict the ultimate strength of shale under the triaxial and polyaxial state of stress. A database containing 93 datasets was obtained from the results of the uniaxial, triaxial, polyaxial compressive tests, an indirect tensile test was collected from reliable references, and this test was carried out on the shale samples taken from the southwestern oil...

In this paper, a real maintenance workforce-constrained scheduling problem is formulated as a bi-objective mixed-integer programming model with the aim of simultaneously minimizing the workforce requirements and maximizing the equipment availability. The skilled workforce is provided by internal and external resources using regular time, overtime and contracting. The equipment availability is m...
